The Crossroads Writing Project's mission is to promote exemplary instruction of writing by empowering teachers as writers, researchers and leaders.
The Crossroads Writing Project is a teacher development and leadership program affiliated with the National Writing Project, the largest profession-development organization in the United States. The writing project believes that teacher expertise is the core of good writing instruction, that teachers are the best leaders in school change, and that writing is an act of courage, inquiry, and growth.
The Crossroads Writing Project is one of 195 National Writing Project sites across the country. It serves K-16 teachers across northern lower Michigan, including Traverse City, Gaylord, Alpena, Manistee, Ludington, Cadillac, West Branch, and Mt. Pleasant. Begun in 1998 by Brenda Vasicek and Lynn Chrenka, , the CWP has conducted institutes and inservice programs with a growing roster of teacher-consultants. The CWP provided over 5000 contact hours with teachers, students, and community members in 2005-2006.
CWP is an authorized provider of professional development in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Title II, Chapter 6, Subpart II. The National Writing Project is listed in the NCLB catalog of models for comprehensive school reform.
